Digital ballasts with a leading role
Innovative technology demonstrates competence, for example, in lighting solutions where great importance is attributed to user-friendly and energy saving characteristics. Thus PCA EXCEL one4all digital ballasts have been given a key part to play in the ambitious lighting management system at the new Wessex Water building in Bath, Great Britain.

As far as the lighting solution was concerned, the client Wessex Water described the scope of its requirements as being to construct a building which would have as little effect on the environment as possible. The consulting engineering department at Buro Happold decided on a lighting design which combines efficient light sources and luminaires with an ingenious control system which generates a constant lighting situation at the workplace which is dependent on the level of light outside and includes attendance checks.

PCA EXCEL one4all digital ballasts are the ideal solution to these diverse requirements. “Claris“ luminaires from Zumtobel Staff were selected which guarantee the required illuminance of 400 lux at the workplace.

"We chose Tridonic Atco ballasts because of their wide dimming range of up to 1 % of the luminous flux" explained Umesh Patel from Buro Happold. The capability of the PCA EXCEL one4all with its dimming facilities for the slimline T5 fluorescent lamps is exemplary: simple switch controls with switchDIM, constant light controls with the SMART sensor, tried and tested, flexible systems with DSI and individually addressable solutions with DALI – the new standardised interface protocol. Thus you have four functions combined in a single device.

With constant light control, the SMART light sensor calculates the lighting level on the work surfaces with a maximum of 400 lux from which the PCA EXCEL one4all ballast generates the dimming value for the artificial light. So you can save energy on the one hand and guarantee the required level of lighting on the other. The additional integration of the presence detector and infrared transmission within one module give the solution the edge.

The Claris direct/indirect beam pendulum luminaire has been installed by T. Clarke. The T5 fluorescent lamps used represent maximum luminous efficiency and energy savings. The luminaires are arranged in groups of 2x26 W in the offices or 2x14 W in the corridors so that the employees can move around the buildings safely even outside normal work hours. The Claris luminaires with acoustic wings have been provided specially for this project; on the one hand they guarantee ideal sound absorption and offer wiring spaces for fire alarms and PA systems on the other.

This impressive lighting solution provides optimum interaction between the individual components – luminaire, PCA EXCEL one4all ballasts and intelligent controls.

Thus ergonomically optimised light at work – with the option of manual intervention – will promote the well-being of the employees at Wessex Water’s.

Comfort through indirect lighting
The 20 % indirect ratio emphasises the roof structure and improves the effect of the internal architectural components while the indirect light ensures equal distribution of illuminance and balanced modelling.
Presence and daylight detection
"Although the individual sensors detect different luminance values depending on the visual task, for example white paper or dark floor desk coverings, this overload capability leads to uniform brightness values in the rows of luminaires". (Umesh Patel from Buro Happold)
